Even the most marvelous computer eventually winds up in the trash. The United Nations estimates that 20 million to 50 million tons of e-waste are created worldwide every year. 12 all those circuit-boards and plastic casings do not just vanish on their own. A lot ends up in a place called Guiyu, once a quiet fishing village on China's coast, 150 miles from Hong Kong. Now as many as 100,000 workers do the dirty and very dangerous work of 13 and recycling the scraps, which contain toxins such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. A health survey done last year by nearby Shantou University found that of 165 children under the age of 6 examined in Guiyu, 82% had 14 of lead poisoning. A vast majority of the e-waste comes from the US and countries in Europe -despite rules established at the 1989 Basel Convention that banned the trading of toxic materials. China passed its own law banning the 15 of e-waste in 2002, after a report drew attention to Guiyu. But the law is ineffectual 16 smuggling and local corruption. Guiyu is not the only place recycling the discarded computers of richer nations. Similar operations have been found by environmental groups in Karachi, Pakistan, and Chittagong, Bangladesh.

22 One of the things we need to get away from is the notion that science and technological know-how is a general-purpose magic bullet that will solve all problems.
The idea that science and technological know-how will solve all problems is like a magic bullet.
Science and technology cannot solve all problems -this is what we need to keep in mind.
We must have faith in science and technology, which, like a magic bullet, will solve all of our problems.
Science and technology have created a general-purpose magic bullet which will solve all problems.
About six million American men are diagnosed with depression each year. 23 In a confessional culture in which Americans are increasingly obsessed with their health, it may seem clichéd -men are from Mars, women from Venus, and all that -to say that men tend not to take care of themselves and are reluctant to own up to mental illness. But the facts highly suggest that men tend not to take care of themselves and are reluctant to own up to mental illness. Although depression is emotionally crippling and has numerous medical implications -some of them deadly -many men fail to recognize the symptoms. 24 And even when they do realize they have a problem, men often view asking for help as an admission of weakness, a betrayal of their male identities.
The result is a hidden epidemic of despair that is destroying marriages, disrupting careers, filling jail cells, clogging emergency rooms, and costing society billions of dollars in lost productivity and medical bills. It is also creating a cohort of children who carry the burden of their fathers' pain for the rest of their lives. The Gary Cooper model of manhood -what Tony Soprano called 'the strong, silent type' -is so deeply embedded in our social psyche that some men would rather kill themselves than confront the fact that they feel despondent, inadequate, or helpless. 'Our definition of a successful man in this culture does not include being depressed, down or sad,' says Michael Addis, chair of psychology at Clark University in Massachusetts. ' 25 A successful man is always up, positive, in charge, and in control of his emotions.'
23 Some of the symptoms of depression are so severe, like gambling addiction or alcoholism, that they are often mistaken for the problem.
Instead of talking about their feelings, men may mask them with alcohol, drug abuse, gambling, anger or by becoming workaholics.
In many ways it is the exact opposite.
But millions more suffer silently, unaware that their problem has a name or unwilling to seek treatment.

Depression has been linked to heart disease, heart attacks and strokes, and other problems that affect men at a higher rate than women.
