16 Any serious conversation about the planet's climate and our energy future must begin, paradoxically, with a backward look at geologic time.
The earth's climate patterns and energy consumption are, contradictorily, determined by the geologic past of the planet.
All important discussions about the climate and energy future of Earth must take the paradox of geologic time into consideration.
A historical review of the earth's geological past will, interestingly, assist our discussions about the planet's climate and energy future.
A retrospective view of the geologic time of Earth offers little insight into the planet's climate and energy future.

A study, commissioned by the International Council of Shopping Centers, found that 'teenagers in suburban centers are bored and come to the shopping centers mainly as a place to go. Teenagers in suburban centers spent more time fighting, drinking, littering, and walking than did their urban counterparts, but presented fewer overall problems.' The report observed that 'adolescents congregated in groups of two to four and predominantly at locations selected by them rather than management.' This probably had something to do with the decision to install game arcades, which allow management to channel these restless adolescents into naturally contained areas away from major traffic points of adult shoppers. The study concluded that mall management should tolerate and even encourage the teenage presence because, in the words of the report, 'the vast majority support the same set of values as does shopping center management.' The same set of values means simply that mall kids are already preprogrammed to be consumers and that the mall can put the finishing touches to them as hard-core, lifelong shoppers just like everybody else. That, after all, is what the mall is about. So, it should not be surprising that in spending a lot of time there, adolescents find little that challenges the assumption that the goal of life is to make money and buy products, or that just about everything else in life is to be used to serve those ends.
19 What is this passage mainly about?
Teenagers are encouraged to spend time in the mall.
Teenagers should be contained in some particular areas of the mall.
Teenagers are likely to become loyal adult shoppers since the mall provides a hangout place for them.
Teenagers in suburban areas enjoy shopping in the mall more than their urban counterparts.
20 According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
Teenagers like to hang out in places where most adult shoppers visit.
Teenagers in suburban areas have caused more problems than those in urban areas because suburban teenagers spend too much time fooling around in the mall.
The installation of game arcades helps mall management keep teenagers in one area away from major shopping areas.
Mall management should not encourage teenagers to hang out with their friends in the mall.
21 According to the passage, why is it hard for teenagers to challenge the assumption that the goal of life is to make money and buy products?
They cannot find any other hangout place better than the mall.
They have been doing a lot of shopping in the mall.
They can easily get bored and need to find a place to go.
They are likely to be turned into consumers by spending a lot of time in the mall.

As it develops, every society produces a series of images and narratives that in some sense become the common property of its members. These 'myths' and 'legends' serve a variety of functions in the society. Some offer an explanation of the society's physical and cultural origins. 22 Still others express the society's beliefs, rituals, standards of morality, and values.
The origins of early tales and legends are a matter of considerable speculation. 23 No doubt, too, whatever the initial form of a story, as it gets told and retold, it will gradually be developed, embellished, and altered over time. Particularly in pre-literate cultures, even well-developed myths seem to change over time as the conditions of life change. 24 Different groups within a society construct and pass on stories they prefer. Ultimately the stories of the dominant group in a society themselves may come to dominate. 25 This offers a form of resistance to cultural extinction, especially among oppressed minorities.
22 Some myths and legends are not expected to be realistic.
Some justify the society's hierarchy and other public arrangements.
They present images of what the society regards as valued and deplored behavior.
They probably emerge from an interaction of historical events or individual creations.
23 They probably emerge from an interaction of historical events or individual creations.
The creation of myths is not a phenomenon of the dim past.
But alternate myths often continue to live a kind of 'underground' existence.
In many cases, divergent myths coexist within a culture, at least for a while.
